Troop 46  Minneapolis, MN

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How old do I have to be to join the troop?

    1. Typically individuals join the Troop after graduating from 5th Grade.  Many come from a Cub Scout Pack, like Pack 46 (K-5).  BUT, There is no requirement to have been a cub scout, you can join the troop any time between 5th grade and turning 18.

  2. What do I do as a Scout if I join Troop 46?

    1. It’s up to you!!  We have many scouts who like to come to the meetings, make new friends and learn.  Some Scouts like to attend every campout but aren’t interested in Rank advancement, and many Scouts come to earn rank advancements and merit badges. Some only go camping.  Scouting is flexible and we encourage Scouts to have fun and pursue the parts of scouting that are most meaningful to them.

  3. What Do I do as a Parent if my child join’s Troop 46?

    1. We encourage parents to volunteer in some way.  There are visible roles like uniformed adult leaders, or there are roles that are more behind the scenes coordinating events, treasurer, merit badge counselors (a great one for anyone!!), or other roles.  ALL adults in the Troop are unpaid volunteers and most are parents of active Scouts in the Troop.  There are events that are once per year which are also great to volunteer for if you don’t have the ability for a recurring commitment.

  4. What happens at Troop Meetings?

    1. Troop meetings are run and planned by the Scouts.  The troop is broken into smaller patrols, each with a leader.  The meetings are usually a mix of some requirements or advancements work (knot tying, coin collecting, etc.), outdoor games, or other activities.  Unlike Cub Scouts, where parents stay for the meetings, with the Troop, most parents drop off their Scout and don’t stay.  Scouts have the opportunity within the meetings to learn and demonstrate leadership skills, planning and public speaking with their peers. The roles for adult leaders is more to guide and help the Scout leaders.
